The Patent Asset Index provides an objective comparison of technology strength and innovation.

The Patent Asset Index is a new method to benchmark patent portfolios that overcomes the limitations of prior approaches. It compares the entire current patent portfolio of companies in a global economy. It stands for a transparent calculation of the indicators and a reliable measurement of the competitive impact of the patents.

All worldwide patents and patent applications are analysed to calculate the Patent Asset Index. The current extent of patent protection in global markets (Market Coverage) and the relevance of the patents for subsequent developments (Technology Relevance) of all patents are evaluated.

These two factors determine the Competitive Impact of a patent. The Patent Asset Index measures the combined Competitive Impact of all patents in a portfolio and thus corporate technology strength.

The methodology has been developed based on academic research and it has been scrutinized by patent and innovation experts from a variety of companies. The theoretical foundations and the calculation and validation of the Patent Asset Index will be published in detail in a scientific article.

Please see our online presentations containing an overview of the methodology and a benchmark of the top 10 chemical companies.
